W2 Service Learning Hours Tracking Form
Service learning integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach social responsibility, encourage lifelong civic engagement, and strengthen communities for the common good. The expectation is that students will be involved in a minimum of 12 hours of community service that purposefully enhances the well-being of self and others. This community involvement will be identified and planned for in their Personal Plan for Wellness. It is intended that students evaluate how service learning experiences enhance the well-being of the volunteer while providing meaningful services to the individual or organization.

The Wellness 10 class at Shaunavon High School participates in a Right To Play Service Learning Project that involves the collecting, sorting, storage and Sarcan drop-off of bottle recycling for our high school. The class shares this project with our SRC, alternating monthly or every semester with half the funds raised each school year donated to Right to Play. Check out Right to Play for yourself!

Students are introduced to the Right to Play organization at the beginning of the Service Learning outcome with the class project being used as an exemplar for the Service Learning process. The students are put onto rotating Recycling Squads which they creatively name for the semester. One squad recycles each week (often Fridays in our world) with each squad usually recycling once a month. With 5-7 students on each squad, it generally takes around 10-15 minutes to recycle each week for our high school.

Our Right to Play Service Learning Project not only connects to all five dimensions of wellness, but we also make connections to the W4 Mental Well-Being, W5 Self-Awareness & Self-Management, W6 Culture of Safety, W8 Relationships, W9 Community Challenges and W12 Spirituality outcomes throughout our Wellness 10 course.
